7 hacks to make hostel life run smoothly

Hostel life can be a roller coaster, especially for the people moving out of their homes for the first time. It takes time and energy to adjust to the new lifestyle while balancing work or academics. However, the hostel experience is one of a kind, so here are some tips that may come in handy for your initially daunting few weeks.
  1. Mingle with the hostel staff An essential hack is to stay on good terms with the hostel staff – they are the ones that will unveil the hidden perks of hostel life for you – be it a special preference in “mess ka khana” or access to late night munching.
  2. Carry some of your home spices – One thing you will surely miss when being in a hostel is homemade food until your taste buds adapt to hostel food, but worry not, food cooked at the GHS mess is as delicious & nutritious as a home-cooked meal. However, it would be a sweat to carry some of your homemade spices to stay in touch with your homely feeling!
  3. Learn to share – It’s important to remember that sharing tightens the bond between roommates, classmates and friends in the hostel. When one is living independently, a trustworthy friend is the greatest asset!
  4. Notice Me Bowl – Often, in a hurry, we tend to forget essentials like keys, watches or other accessories. So here’s what you need to do, get a “Notice Me Bowl” one that is easily visible, keep all those essentials in it and place it somewhere beside your door (so that whenever you’re heading out, it’ll be noticeable!)
  5. Learn to say “No” – It’s amazing to have a lot of friends, to socialize and create memories, although one needs to realise to not take steps out of peer pressure. Master the art of saying “No” when you’re uncomfortable with a plan or an activity. It’ll help you build confidence while living independently.
  6. Savings – An essential survival hack that is quite a powerful one when you’re living independently. Whether it’s an emergency or a budget issue, your savings can come in handy anytime! It also educates you to have a budget plan & adjust your finances accordingly.
  7. Be on good terms with your seniors – Your seniors are the key to any hurdles you might face in a hostel or your academics.
